Topekan grows salon business over 40 years
Stephanie Carter is celebrating the 40th birthday of her salon’s opening, and along with that, she celebrates the freedom and success she built for herself as a businesswoman.
Resiliency is a trait that led her through tough times, she said. Carter moved her store several times, went through break-ins and robberies and even her husband getting shot. Today, she operates Stephanie’s Hair Salon & Boutique, 123 E. 10th St., where she specializes in ethnic hair because that’s what she trained to take care of and where she developed expertise, Carter said.
Carter built her business by taking care of customers. In most businesses, but maybe especially in person care work like salons, word of mouth is critical.
“The best customer is a repeat customer,” Carter said. “I’ve been through generations. I’ve watched their families grow up. I wind up doing the mother, then I wind up doing the daughter and sometimes the granddaughter.”
In fact, the very first customer who walked through her door 40 years ago is still a customer today.
